What is past ties?

We named our archive after Pacific Ties, established in 1977 at UCLA, the oldest student-run Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) newsmagazine in the nation.

The student organization seeks to showcase diverse stories of the APIDA community, challenge perceptions of the APIDA identity, and to celebrate the achievements of the community. As Past Ties, we aim to honor this legacy by archiving the oldest digitally preserved issue.

Our Project

Today, you can find many of the Pacific Ties’ quarterly print newsmagazines online on their Issuu page. Although they have been publishing since 1977, their digital repository currently only has 24 publications dating from 2009 to 2024.

We decided to create a digital archive of the February 1978 issue, the oldest publication of Pacific Ties, in order to preserve the roots of the newsmagazine and to analyze the significance of advocacy and preservation of the APIDA community through journalism.

We also focused on 6 articles (artifacts) from the February 1978 issue to gauge the effectiveness of manual vs. AI tools in the archival process.
